“It's a cruel irony that two of the most frustrating things to deal with as a driver are bad roads and road works,” writes Ben Moore at BusinessDesk NZ In the lead up to this piece, Downer New Zealand's Oliver Fradley and I both sat down with Ben to unpack the antiquated practices that too long underpinned infrastructure and transport’s efforts to build smart and sustainable cities of the future, and how together, we’re changing this through putting #technology and #innovation at the epicentre. We’re doing this at a critical time when, across the world, city infrastructure is crumbling, congestion is worsening, and cities are investing in more public transport projects that are costly, time-consuming and disruptive. Ollie touched on Downer’s work on busy central Auckland route #ManukauRoad, which is a perfect case of where we helped lower community disruption and drive economic and environmental gains, working closely with several stakeholders. Ollie said, “we sat down with the Auckland Transport team and the public transport guys and said, ‘We think if we bookend this over two weekends, around school holidays when generally there's a little bit of a lull in the traffic there – and we proved it with some pre-monitoring a couple of months beforehand – we can deliver this over two weekends and two nights in the week’.” Fewer shifts meant the team chopped delivery time by three-fold, which meant less impact on commuters (fewer angry drivers and a safer work environment for the crew), they saved on set-up and break down of equipment, and more uninterrupted time meant fewer breaks in the laying of asphalt, resulting in a longer lasting surface. With the decade ahead expected to welcome an average extra 60 people to Auckland per day – a story familiar to most cities across the globe – creating space for the city to thrive now and into the future will see a ‘step ahead’ approach form part of the industry narrative. https://lnkd.in/g7cf2rVG #creatingspace with Mooven.

I thoroughly enjoyed being part of #SouthernSaaS24 last week. It's outstanding to see such a world-class event out of New Zealand, showcasing how Kiwis are having a global impact and helping to inform the next generation of SaaS businesses. A big thanks to Jack Tame for a superb job as MC, along with excellent talks from Aaron Ward, Lovina McMurchy, Carter Perez, Tatyana Mamut, Michael Philpott ⚓️, Ian Bishop, Amber Taylor and Bruce Jarvis
And that's a wrap on #SouthernSaaS24! We've had a stellar afternoon with more incredible insights from our line-up of speakers. A big thank you to everyone who spoke this afternoon, including: 🎤 Public speaking coach Michael Philpott ⚓️ on the magic of SaaS storytelling and the art of a good presentation. It's a great reminder that storytelling skills are not necessarily an innate talent, and can be learnt! 🌎 Mooven founder Micah Gabriels, who shared a fascinating look into the tensions of expanding your business beyond the ANZ market, both within the workplace, and when it comes to partners and family. 🧠 Chief Marketing Officer at Groov, Ian Bishop, on how SaaS can tackle the stresses of the current "performance era" in the workplace, where employees are being asked to do more with less. Ian also shared insights into how impact, engagement and ROI must work together when selling B2B. 💪 Les Mills International's CDPO, Amber Taylor, on the brand's huge digital journey over the past four years. While you might think of fitness as inherently IRL, Les Mills' SaaS-based approach to "omnifitness" is creating a wrap-around way to move for its thousands of customers around the globe. Thanks again to our awesomely engaged live audience and our fabulous MC Jack Tame. We hope everyone came away from today with something to chew on. As always, it's fantastic to see so many NZ SaaS folks in the same space. Keep the knowledge flowing! Make sure you're signed up as a kiwiSaaS community member www.kiwisaas.com.

The integration of technology into paving and maintenance works can be neglected over capital works... with a perception that high volumes of small works don’t naturally align with the same needs and intensive focus that capital improvement infrastructure projects get. In this webinar, we’ll show how the opportunities achieved in major and minor capital works can also be achieved for higher volume works. (We've also given capital works the spotlight in our first webinar here if you missed it: https://lnkd.in/gvh9PX2r) Join us for this quick webinar next week - see you there!

The last two days have provided a great window into how the UK is thinking about technology's role in shaping the transport landscape. The Transport Technology Forum is championed by the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, and provided invaluable insight into the current priorities and challenges of local authorities. So nice to see a sell-out crowd and a packed theatre. A big thank you to Darren Capes FIET FIHE for inviting me to present on 'the art of the possible' to help spark conversations around DfT's Roads to Tomorrow initiative, and to 4way Consulting and Jason Loader for inviting Mooven along as a partner.
